In the Kharku Movement, numerous militant Singhs performed significant and secretive acts of service throughout their struggle, remaining a mystery to the police. Unfortunately, after their sacrifices, there was a failure on our part to highlight these individuals within the Sikh community. One such figure was Bhai Harvinder Singh, also known as Mathra Singh.
Bhai Mathra Singh became a significant target for the Hindustani government, which placed a bounty of 14 lakh rupees on his head. The intelligence agencies of the Hindustani government were deeply apprehensive of Bhai Mathra Singh’s audacious actions. Even after Bhai Sahib Ji’s martyrdom, these agencies couldn’t discern his true identity or origins.
Birth and Early Life
Bhai Mathra Singh was born on May 13, 1965, in Guwahati (Assam) to father Gurdeep Singh Ji and mother Gurmej Kaur Ji. During those days, his father was employed in Guwahati, Assam. Bhai Sahib was the youngest among three siblings, with an elder sister named Darshan Kaur and a younger brother named Satnam Singh. From childhood, Bhai Mathra Singh Ji was a devout follower of Gurbani and exhibited a deep understanding of religious customs and practices.
He pursued his education up to class VIII at the Christian Mission School in Guwahati. Bhai Mathra Singh Ji refrained from attending the morning prayer at the school. When questioned by teachers about his absence from the prayer, he explained that the school’s prayer did not align with the prayer of his Guru. He reiterated, ‘Deh Siva Bar Mohi Ihai, Subh Karman Te Kabhun Na Tro,’ emphasizing that their prayer was directed solely to their revered Guru Sahib Ji. He firmly identified himself as a Sikh of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, not a follower of Christianity. Bhai Sahib Ji often remained silent, continuously chanting ‘Waheguru Waheguru.’
Joining Bhindranwale’s Jatha
In March 1984, amidst the Dharma Yudh Morcha agitation, Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale addressed a significant gathering of Sikhs on the second floor of the Guru Ramdas Langar. This occasion saw Sikhs ready to sacrifice themselves at a mere word from Sant Ji. Sikhs found a leader in Sant Jarnail Singh Ji who couldn’t be swayed by power or money. His unwavering stance against oppression was inspiring.
During the assembly, a Sikh woman rose from the crowd and approached the stage, expressing her desire to enroll her son in Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa’s group.
Sant Ji responded warmly, “Bibi, your son is welcome to join our group as per your wish.”
The woman expressed, “Saint Ji, I wish to enlist my son in your exclusive Jatha.”
Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa replied, “Bibi, I don’t enlist Singhs based on height, chest size, or age in my group. Any Singh who wishes to stay is welcome here. Whether blind or having any physical disability, all are embraced. A visually impaired Singh can operate the water pump to serve the congregation, people who have a disability can assist with dishwashing, and the deaf can distribute langar. Anyone can engage in Gurbani Santhya to become well-versed in Sikhism and promote its teachings. If someone is courageous, they can stand for Sikh rights against anti-Sikh authorities and combat the oppressors. But if they turn traitor, it will result in the martyrdom of my four Singhs.”
Sant Ji then remarked, “Bibi, I only enlist a Singh in the specialized group who can remove the hats of CRP men and snatch their Sten guns.”
Upon hearing this, the lady fell silent. Amidst the vast gathering of the Sikh Sangat, a Singh cheered the Jaikara ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal…Sat Sri Akal’ and was praised by the Sikhs. The Sikh Sangat had resolved to honor the Sant Ji’s words.
In this assembly, Bhai Harwinder Singh, an 18-19-year-old young man with a mustache resident from Chauda Madhra village in the Gurdaspur district, arrived with his friends and companions at Sri Darbar Sahib to meet Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale and engage in discussions.
Bhai Harwinder Singh Ji chose to execute Sant Jarnail Singh Ji’s directive. He rose from the congregation and proceeded to the city market, Ghanta Ghar Chowk in Amritsar, where government-assigned CRP personnel were stationed approximately 50 to 50 feet apart. Approaching one of the CRP soldiers, Bhai Harwinder Singh forcefully kicked the soldier’s legs, causing him to fall face-first. Taking advantage of the situation, Bhai Harwinder Singh swiftly confiscated the soldier’s Sten gun and his cap, fled the scene, and came inside Sri Darbar Sahib.
Bhai Harwinder Singh Ji presented the Sten gun to Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa. Sant Bhindranwale expressed his appreciation for this courageous act, welcoming Bhai Harvinder Singh with resounding Jaikare chants of ‘Sat Sri Akal.’
Following this courageous act, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa conferred the name of Bhai Mathra Singh upon Bhai Harwinder Singh after administering Amrit to him through the Panj Pyara of the Jatha.
June 84
Bhai Mathra Singh Ji was present outside Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar during the Hindustan government’s military operation in June 1984. This operation targeted Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib Amritsar, and 37 other Gurdwaras, resulting in a brutal massacre of Sikhs. The profound impact of this event prompted Bhai Mathra Singh to organize his fellow Singhs after the June 1984 incident.
Bhai Mathra Singh chose not to mourn but to fight for the freedom of the Sikh community. He rallied his fellow Singhs, forming a clandestine Kharku Group, and initiated an armed struggle to seek justice for Sikhs and counter the anti-Sikh perpetrators.
KCF Organization
The initial members of his Jatha who joined him in this armed struggle included Bhai Manbir Singh Chaheru, Bhai Charanjit Singh Channi (Talwandi), Bhai Jarnail Singh Halwara, Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha, Bhai Satnam Singh Bawa, Bhai Manjit Singh Jammu, Bhai Ranjit Singh Kuki, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, Bhai Surinder Singh Shindu alias K.C. Sharma, along with courageous individuals like Bhai Surjit Singh Panta (Delhi). Together, they embarked on a new struggle post-June 1984, aiming to find a definitive solution to end the oppression faced by Sikhs due to Indian aggression.
Actions
Bhai Mathra Singh, despite his short height, exuded immense bravery and exceptional skill in his actions. Fearless and determined, he undertook tasks that others deemed impossible. Each of his endeavors garnered front-page attention in regional, national, and international media, and governments found themselves confronted with real challenges that instilled fear each time. Some of his famous actions included:
- The assassination of Ramesh Chandra, son of Lala Jagat Narayan.
- Masterminding the liberation of General Bhai Labh Singh Panjwar from police custody at the Jalandhar courtrooms, resulted in daring actions and the elimination of several Police officers.
- Assassination DG of Prisons Katoch in Chandigarh, who was responsible for oppressing numerous Singhs.
- The assassination of Lalit Maken, a Member of the Indian Parliament accused in the Delhi riots, at his residence in Delhi.
- Executing Delhi riot accused Arjan Das, a Member of the Indian Parliament, of retribution for the Delhi riots, in Delhi.
- Successful rescue operation of Bhai Harjinder Singh from Ahmedabad police custody in Gujarat. Bhai Mathra Singh’s militant and audacious actions reverberated throughout India.
Assassination of General Vaidiya
On October 31, 1984, Bhai Satwant Singh, Bhai Beant Singh, and Bhai Kehar Singh avenged the Army’s Golden Temple operation by assassinating PM Indira Gandhi. During this period, Bhai Mathra Singh was in Delhi, strategizing future movements. Meanwhile, the Indian army chief, responsible for the military operation at Sri Harmandir Sahib and the destruction of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, resulting in the massacre of numerous Sikhs, was General Vaidya.
Under Bhai Mathra Singh’s guidance, a plan was orchestrated to eliminate General Vaidya. On August 10, 1986, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha and Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda executed Vaidya in broad daylight in Pune. Authorities identified Bhai Mathra Singh as the key mastermind behind this operation.
Mathra Singh – A Mystery
After these numerous actions, Bhai Mathra Singh adhered to a policy of not claiming credit or responsibility for any action. Indian agencies were confounded by these individuals conducting actions openly and effortlessly escaping. Agencies had only one name in their possession – ‘Mathra Singh’ – without any photographic evidence or knowledge of his appearance. Despite being an enigmatic figure to the agencies, the head of the agency offered a reward of 14 lakh rupees for information on Bhai Mathra Singh. Even after his martyrdom, the agencies remained unable to uncover his identity.
Arrest
On June 30, 1987, in the village of Rampura, Jandiala Guru, Police Inspector Harcharan Sinh Suri led a raid on Gyan Singh’s residence along with a police party. An informant had relayed information that a prominent militant was expected to visit Gyan Singh’s house. The police, disguised as civilians (dressed as Singh), besieged Gyan Singh’s family and confined them inside the house. Anyone who approached the house for work was intercepted and apprehended by the disguised police officers.
As several individuals failed to return after visiting Gyan Singh’s house, the village leaders assembled to investigate the situation. When they reached Gyan Singh’s residence to inquire about the disappearances, the police detained all of them as well.
Later that evening, a young man arrived on a bicycle from the direction of Daburji and headed straight for Gyan Singh’s house. He knocked on the door, and since the police were masquerading as Singh, they opened the door and apprehended the young man Mathra Singh as he entered. Subsequently, Gyan Singh and Bhai Mathra Singh were forced into a police jeep and transported to the police station.
Shaheedi -1 July 1987
Thanedar (station head) Suri took Bhai Mathra Singh to the police station and subjected him to severe torture in an attempt to extract secret information. Harcharan Sinh Suri was notorious for his brutality, seeking to force significant revelations from Bhai Mathra Singh. However, Bhai Mathra Singh remained steadfast, proud of his mental fortitude. He defiantly challenged Suri, stating, “Suri, leave the rest, I dare you that you if you could get a name of mine from myself “.
Despite Suri’s relentless torture, Bhai Mathra Singh’s mind remained unshaken. His unwavering determination thwarted all of Suri’s brutal attempts. On the night of July 1, 1987, he was taken to the farms of Maluwal, Jandiala-Guru, and mercilessly shot dead. The newspapers the following day highlighted the news of Bhai Mathra Singh’s encounter and the police’s portrayal of bravery.
The final rites of Bhai Mathra Singh Ji were performed with the Sri Akhand Path Sahib of SGGS Ji on July 10, 1987, at his ancestral village, Chauda Madhra, near Sri Hargobindpur, District Gurdaspur. During this solemn martyrdom ceremony, Baba Thakur Singh Ji, along with the Damdami Taksal Jatha, AISSF federation workers, and a large gathering of Sikh Sangat, paid homage to Bhai Mathra Singh with heartfelt devotion.
Shaheedi Revenge
The martyrdom of Bhai Mathra Singh dealt a significant blow to the KCF (Khalistan Commando Force). The members of KCF were determined to avenge Bhai Sahib’s martyrdom. It took nearly three years until the day arrived when the Kharku Singhs orchestrated the retribution. Harcharan Sinh Suri, the individual responsible for Bhai Mathra Singh’s martyrdom, was targeted by the Kharku Singhs on February 11, 1990. He was blown up in the Training Center Phillaur, as they placed a bomb under his sleeping bed.
After Shaheedi – A Continuing Mystery?
Following the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Mathra Singh ji, intelligence agencies considered his case closed. However, the Delhi Police’s crime branch, based on the testimony of a well-known Kharku from Sangrur district, has claimed that Bhai Mathra Singh is alive and has implicated him as the prime suspect in the murder case of Lalit Maken MP and his wife, Gitanjali Maken. Despite this, those arrested in the Vaidya case did not confirm whether Bhai Mathra Singh was deceased or alive.
Presently, the Delhi Police has realized that the repeated mention of Bhai Mathra Singh as the mastermind of the Bhai Jinda Sukha group in the Delhi bank robberies is a false attribution. The CBI also shares this understanding. Both the CBI and the police lack any photographic evidence of Bhai Mathra Singh. The police report that Jinda portrays him as something he is not. Jinda revealed his own actions to the police but had no information about Bhai Mathra Singh. The only confirmed details are that Bhai Mathra Singh leads a group of 10-12 individuals and is a reserved person who consistently chants Waheguru. He prefers solitude, avoids socializing, abstains from alcohol, avoids interactions with women, and has no vices. Although the Delhi Police believes they have identified Bhai Mathra Singh and suggest his father once resided in Assam, the CBI remains uncertain about this information.

ਖਾੜਕੂ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਖਾੜਕੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਜਿੰਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਪਤ ਰਿਹ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਚੋਟੀ ਦੇ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਪਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਲਈ ਭੇਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੇ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਵੀ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਰਹੀ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ । ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਸੀ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਉਰਫ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ।
ਇਹੋ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ 14 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਸੀ। ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੁਫ਼ੀਆ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀਆ ਦਲੇਰਾਨਾ ਕਾਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੈਅ-ਭੀਤ ਸਨ। ਖੁੱਦ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਟੀ ਦੇ ਤਜ਼ਰਬੇਕਾਰ ਕਹਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨੀ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ, ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਤੱਕ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾ ਸਕੀਆਂ।
ਜਨਮ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਢਲਾ ਜੀਵਨ
ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 13 ਮਈ 1965 ਨੂੰ ਗੁਹਾਟੀ (ਆਸਾਮ) ਵਿਖੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੇਜ ਕੌਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਖੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਤਿੰਨ ਭੈਣ-ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਸਨ, ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੌਰ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਭਰਾ ਸਤਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਰਸੀਏ ਤੇ ਨਿਤਨੇਮੀ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਹਿਤ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰਾ ਵਾਕਿਫ਼ ਸਨ।
ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਈਸਾਈ ਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਕੂਲ ਗੁਹਾਟੀ ਅੱਠਵੀਂ ਤੱਕ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸਕੂਲ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਛਣ ‘ਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਾਡੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ‘ਦੇਹ ਸਿਵਾ ਬਰ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੈ, ਸੁਭ ਕਰਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਟਰੋ’ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ ਸਿਰਫ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਹਾਂ, ਈਸਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਅਕਸਰ ਚੂਪ-ਚੁਪੀਤੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ‘ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ’ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ।
ਭਿੰਡਰਾਵਾਲਾ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਤੀ
ਧਰਮ ਯੁੱਧ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੰਨ 1984, ਮਾਰਚ ਦੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਭਿੰਡਰਾਂਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਲੰਗਰ ਦੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਮੰਜ਼ਲ ਉਪਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਇਕੱਠ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਿਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਕ – ਇਕ ਬਚਨ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਸਨ । ਬਚਨ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ, ਕਰਨੀ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਾ, 20ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੋ-ਇਕ ਨਿਧੜਕ, ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਆਗੂ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਕਲਾਬੀ ਯੋਧਾ, ਸਿੱਖ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰ, ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾਈ ਰਵਾਇਤਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮਾਂ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਡਟਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਸਿੱਖ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਨਿਰਭੈ, ਨਿਰਵੈਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਂਧੀ, ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਗੂ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਰਸੀ, ਪੈਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ਰੀਦਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਅੱਗੇ ਝੁਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ, ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾਈ ਰਵਾਇਤਾਂ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ, ਉੱਚੇ-ਸੁੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਣ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛਕ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਨ ਲਈ, ਸ਼ਸਤਰਧਾਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਇਕੱਠ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਬੀਬੀ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਸਟੇਜ ‘ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੀ, “ਸੰਤ ਜੀ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ।”
ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ, “ਬੀਬੀ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ, ਛੱਡ ਜਾਹ।”
ਬੀਬੀ ਫਿਰ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੀ, “ਸੰਤ ਜੀ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।”
ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ, “ਬੀਬੀ, ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਰਤੀ ਕੱਦ ਮਿਣ ਕੇ, ਛਾਤੀ ਮਿਣ ਕੇ, ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ-ਮਿਣਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ । ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੇ, ਉਹ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਥੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ, ਲੰਗੜਾ, ਲੂਲ੍ਹਾ, ਕਾਣਾ ਸਭ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਨਲਕਾ ਗੇੜੀ ਜਾਉ, ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਜਲ ਛਕੀ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ । ਕਾਣਾ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਮਾਂਜੀ ਜਾਉ, ਲੰਗਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਉ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਥਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ । ਜੇ ਅਣਖੀਲਾ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੋਊ ਤਾਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜੂਝ ਕੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਧ-ਸੁਧਾਈ ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਜੇ ਗ਼ੱਦਾਰ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਚਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਰਾਵੇਗਾ ਹੀ।””
ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਫਿਰ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ, “ਬੀਬੀ, ਪੱਕੇ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬਾਹਰ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਟੋਪੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੀ.ਆਰ.ਪੀ. ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਟੇਨਗਨ ਖੋਹ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਵੇ ।”
ਇਹ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬੀਬੀ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਗਈ। ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਇਕੱਠ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਬੋਲੇ ਸੋ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਦਾ ਜੈਕਾਰਾ ਗਜਾਇਆ, ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ‘ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ’ ਦੇ ਜੈਕਾਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਾਲ ਗਜ ਉੱਠਿਆ। ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਇਸ ਇਕੱਠ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ 18-19 ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਛ-ਫੁੱਟ ਗੱਭਰੂ, ਪਿੰਡ ਚੌੜਾ ਮਧਰਾ (ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ) ਦਾ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਗੀ-ਸਾਥੀ ਸੱਜਣਾਂ-ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਦਾਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਭਿੰਡਰਾਂਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸੁਣਨ ਲਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਬਜ਼ਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਕਲ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਘੰਟਾ-ਘਰ ਚੌਂਕ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ) ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਏ। ਜਿਥੇ ਸੀ.ਆਰ.ਪੀ. ਦੇ ਜਵਾਨ ਬਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿਚ 50-50 ਫੁਟ ‘ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਤਾਇਨਾਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਘੰਟਾ-ਘਰ ਚੌਂਕ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਇਨਾਤ ਸੀ.ਆਰ.ਪੀ. ਦੇ ਜਵਾਨ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੁੱਚਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੀ ਠੁੱਡਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਿ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਮੂੰਹ-ਭਾਰ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਿਆ ।
ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਮੌਕਾ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ, ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦੀ ਸਟੇਨਗਨ ਖੋਹ ਕੇ ਭੱਜ ਕੇ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਰਕਰਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਵੜਿਆ । ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਟੇਨਗਨ ਲਿਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੇ ‘ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ’ ਦੇ ਜੈਕਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ । ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਜਥੇ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਪਿਆਰਿਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛਕਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਰੱਖਿਆ।
ਜੂਨ 84
ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ 40 ਗੁਰਧਾਮਾਂ ਉਪਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਜੂਨ 1984 ਦੀ ਤੋਪਾਂ ਟੈਂਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਫੌਜੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ, ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਸਮੇਂ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਉਰਫ਼ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਸਨ। ਜੂਨ 1984 ਦੀ ਘਲੂਘਾਰਾ ਫੌਜੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ, ਸਿੱਖ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੜਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਅਸਰ ਪਾਇਆ । ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਜੂਨ 1984 ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਥੇਬੰਦਕ ਕੀਤਾ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਝੂਰਨ-ਰੋਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਲਈ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰਨ, ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਖ਼ੂਨੀ ਹਤਿਆਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਧਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਤਰਿਆ । ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਲਈ ਹਥਿਆਰ-ਬੰਦ ਘੋਲ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਲੀ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਕੌਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਚਹੇੜੂ, ਭਾਈ ਚਰਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਚੰਨੀ (ਤਲਵੰਡੀ), ਭਾਈ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਲਵਾਰਾ, ਭਾਈ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਿੰਦਾ, ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁੱਖਾ, ਭਾਈ ਸਤਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਵਾ, ਭਾਈ ਮਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੰਮੂ, ਭਾਈ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੁੱਕੀ, ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁੱਖੀ, ਭਾਈ ਦਲਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿੱਟੂ, ਭਾਈ ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ਿੰਦੂ ਉਰਫ਼ ਕੇ.ਸੀ. ਸ਼ਰਮਾ, ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੈਂਟਾ ਜਿਹੇ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਵੇਂ ਸਿਰਿਉਂ ਤੋਰਿਆ।
ਐਕਸ਼ਨ
ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਕੱਦ ਭਾਵੇ ਥੋੜਾ ਛੋਟਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਫੁਰਤੀਲੇਪਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਹੋਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਅਸੰਭਵ ਲਗਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਦਲੇਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ। ਕਿਸੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਨੇਪੜੇ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਨ ਲਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਬਹੁਤ ਤੇਜ਼ ਚਲਦਾ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਰਾਜਸੀ, ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਮੀਡਿਆ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਖੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਸੀ। ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਉੱਡੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਮਿਸਾਲੀ ਟੱਕਰ ਬਣ ਗਏ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੁੱਖ ਐਕਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਸਨ:
- ਲਾਲਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਦੇ ਛੋਕਰੇ ਰਮੇਸ਼ ਚੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਸੋਧਾ
- ਜਨਰਲ ਭਾਈ ਲਾਭ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੰਜਵੜ ਨੂੰ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਕਚਿਹਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਛੁਡਾ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਦਲੇਰਾਨਾ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ
- ਜੇਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਡੀ.ਜੀ. ਕਟੋਚ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਧਿਆ ਜੋ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਸੀ
- ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਲਲਿਤ ਮਾਕਨ ਐੱਮ.ਪੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ
- ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਦਾਸ ਐੱਮ.ਪੀ. ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ ਲਿਆ
- ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਦੀ ਅਹਿਮਦਾਬਾਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਿੰਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਡਾਇਆ ।
ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੂਰੇ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਾੜਕੂ ਦਲੇਰਾਨਾ ਕਾਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਹਿਲਕਾ ਮੱਚ ਗਿਆ।
ਵੈਦਿਆ ਕਾਂਡ
31 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 1984, ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਅੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਭਾਈ ਸਤਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਕਿਹਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਫੌਜੀ ਹਮਲੇ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਪਾਪਣ ਇੰਦਰਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਧਾ ਲਗਾ ਕੇ ਬਦਲਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਿੱਲ੍ਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੈਂਟਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਠਹਿਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਥਿਆਰਬੰਦ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਓਂਤਬੰਦੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
ਇੰਦਰਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਜੂਨ 1984 ਦੀ ਫੌਜੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫੋਜ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਖੀ ਜਨਰਲ ਅਰੁਨ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਵੈਦਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਧਾ ਲੱਗਾਉਣਾ ਹਲੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਸੀ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਪਾਂ, ਟੈਂਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਢਾਹੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ, ਸਿੰਘਣੀਆਂ, ਬੱਚਿਆਂ, ਬੁੱਢਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਧਾ ਲੱਗਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਪੂਰੀ ਵਿਓਂਤਬੰਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ । ਅੰਤ ਫੋਜ ਮੁਖੀ ਜਨਰਲ ਅਰੁਨ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਵੈਦਿਆ ਨੂੰ 10 ਅਗਸਤ 1986 ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ, ਪੂਨੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਿੰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਨੇ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਈ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ (ਸ਼ਹੀਦ), ਭਾਈ ਮਹਿਤਾਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਮੀਰਾਂਕੋਟ (ਸ਼ਹੀਦ) ਦੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਣਖ ਗ਼ੈਰਤ ਦੀ ਚੜ੍ਹਤ ਦਾ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਦਲਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸ ਕਾਂਡ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਮਾਸਟ ਮਾਈਂਡ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀ ।
ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ – ਇਕ ਰਿਹਸ
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਐਕਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਭੇਤ ਹੀ ਰਹੇ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਨਾ ਚੁੱਕਦੇ। ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਭੈਭੀਤ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕੌਣ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਜੋ ਚਿਟੇ ਦਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਹਵਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਬਹੁਤ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਹੱਥ ਸਿਰਫ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਲਗ ਸਕਿਆ ਸੀ – ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ। ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਦਲੇਰਾਨਾ ਕਾਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਤਨਾ ਭੈਅ-ਭੀਤ ਹੋਈਆਂ, ਨਾਕਾਮ ਵੀ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਕੌਣ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ੋਟੋ ਸੀ। ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਦਾ ਇਨਾਮ 14 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਰਖਿਆ। ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਤਕ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਭੇਤ ਪਤਾ ਨਾ ਲਗ ਸਕਿਆ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ
30 ਜੂਨ 1987 ਨੂੰ ਥਾਣਾ ਜੰਡਿਆਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਰਾਮਪੁਰਾ, ਸ. ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ, ਜੰਡਿਆਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਇੰਸਪੈਕਟਰ ਹਰਚਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰੀ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਛਾਪਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ। ਕਿਸੇ ਮੁਖ਼ਬਰ ਨੇ ਇਤਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਚੋਟੀ ਦੇ ਖਾੜਕੂ ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਹੈ । ਪੁਲਿਸ ਪਾਰਟੀ, ਸਿਵਲ ਕੱਪੜੇ (ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਸੀ) ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਜੋ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸ. ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਕੰਮ-ਧੰਦੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਬੂਹਾ ਖੜਕਾਉਂਦਾ, ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੂਹਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਦੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਗਏ, ਵਾਪਸ ਨਾ ਆਏ ਤਾਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਮੋਹਤਬਰ ਬੰਦੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸ. ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਗਏ ਕਿ ਪਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੋਹਤਬਰ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਦਬੁਰਜੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਸਿਉਂ ਸਾਈਕਲ ‘ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਸ. ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੁਕਿਆ। ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਨੇ ਬੂਹਾ ਖੜਕਾਇਆ, ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਸੀ, ਸੋ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਬੂਹਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ ਤੇ ਦਹਿਲੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਟਪਦੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ । ਪੁਲਿਸ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਪ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਨੂੜ ਕੇ ਥਾਣੇ ਲੈ ਗਈ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ –1 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1987
ਥਾਣੇਦਾਰ ਸੂਰੀ ਨੇ ਥਾਣੇ ਲਿਜਾ ਕੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਉੱਤੇ ਤਸ਼ੱਦਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਸੂਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਭੇਦ ਪਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਹਰਚਰਨ ਸਿਹੁੰ ਸੂਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਰਿੰਦਗੀ ‘ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਦਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸੂਰੀ, ਬਾਕੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਛੱਡ, ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੁੱਛ ਲੈ…।
ਹਰਚਰਨ ਸਿਹੁੰ ਸੂਰੀ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੜਾ ਤਸ਼ੱਦਦ ਕੀਤਾ । ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਸਿਦਕ ਅੱਗੇ ਸੂਰੀ ਦੀ ਦਰਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਫ਼ੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਇਸੇ ਰਾਤ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਜੁਲਾਈ 1987 (ਦਿਨ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ) ਨੂੰ ਪਿੰਡ ਮਾਲੂਵਾਲ, ਥਾਣਾ ਜੰਡਿਆਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਜਾ ਕੇ ਮੁਰਦਾ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਅਗਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਲੱਗ ਗਈਆਂ ।
ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਲਈ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸੀ ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ 10 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1987 ਦਿਨ ਸੁੱਕਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਜੱਦੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਚੌੜਾ ਮਧਰਾ, ਨੇੜੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦਪੁਰ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ । ਇਸ ਮਹਾਨ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿਚ ਦਮਦਮੀ ਟਕਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਜਥੇ ਸਮੇਤ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ੈਡਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਵਰਕਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਭੇਟ ਕੀਤੇ ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ
ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਕੇ.ਸੀ.ਐਫ. ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਸੀ। ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀ ਦੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਬੇਰਹਿਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਬਦਲੇ ਦੀ ਘੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਡੀਕਦੀਆਂ ਕਰੀਬ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲ ਬੀਤ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਆ ਗਿਆ। 11 ਫਰਵਰੀ 1990 ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਹਰਚਰਨ ਸਿਹੁੰ ਸੂਰੀ (ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਕਾਤਲ) ਨੂੰ ਖਾੜਕੂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੇ ਟਰੇਨਿੰਗ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਫਿਲੌਰ ‘ਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੌਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੰਜੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਬੰਬ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਉੜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਅਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਭੇਤ ?
ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸੀਅਤ (ਖ਼ੁਫ਼ੀਆ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਾਈਲ ਬਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ । ਪਰ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਰਾਈਮ ਬ੍ਰਾਂਚ ਨੇ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਨਾਮੀ ਖਾੜਕੂ ਦੀ ਗਵਾਹੀ ‘ਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲਲਿਤ ਮਾਕਨ ਐੱਮ.ਪੀ., ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਗੀਤਾਂਜਲੀ ਮਾਕਨ ਕਤਲ ਕੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਖ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਵੈਦਿਆ ਕੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਕੜੇ ਤਥਾਕਥਿਤ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਜਾਂ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੋਈ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਦਿੱਲੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਈ ਕਿ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਬੈਂਕ ਡਕੈਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਆਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਦੇ ਸਰਗਣੇ ਵਜੋਂ, ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਫਰਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਂ ਹੈ। ਸੀ.ਬੀ.ਆਈ. ਵੀ ਇਹੋ ਸਮਝਦੀ ਰਹੀ । ਸੀ.ਬੀ.ਆਈ. ਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਮੁਹੱਈਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੀ।
ਜਿੰਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਹੈ ਨਹੀਂ। ਜਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਿਸਟਰੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਪਰ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਿਆ । ਸਿਰਫ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ 10-12 ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਗਣਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਚੁੱਪ-ਚੁਪੀਤਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਹਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ-ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਕੱਠੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਕੰਨੀ ਕਤਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਐਬ ਹੈ। ਦਿੱਲੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਥਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਨਾਖ਼ਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਦੀ ਆਸਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਸੀ.ਬੀ.ਆਈ. ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਯਕੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
