In 1978, the Kanpur Massacre was a significant chapter in Sikh history, marked by the sacrifice of eight Gursikhs while protesting against the Nakli Nirankari Dera sect. Among those, the youngest gursikh was Shaheed Kaka Balwant Singh Ji. At the tender age of only 15, Balwant Singh became a martyr for the cause of Guru Sahib’s beadbi.
Balwant Singh Kanpur ‘s early life was marked by adversity. He was born in Kanpur to his father, Sardar Maha Singh, who had migrated from village Khoreean in Dist. Gujarat (now in Pakistan). Tragically, his father passed away when he was just five months old, leaving him an orphan. He had one sister and three brothers, and their mother, Mata Sumitra Kaur, worked tirelessly in people’s homes to provide for the family’s needs. Despite the challenges, she managed to raise her children with love and care.
Balwant Singh received his early education at Guru Nanak School in Kanpur. However, once he reached the eighth grade, he began to sell goods from a cart to contribute to the family’s expenses. This display of responsibility at such a young age exemplified his dedication to his family.
The family had a deep-rooted connection with the Guru Ghar. Balwant Singh Kanpur ‘s grandfather, and great-grandfather, had taken part in the Gurdwara Reform Movement. Bhai Sahib’s grandfather Sardar Gyan Singh Ji was caught by the British government in Gurdwara Sudhar Lehar and he broke his handcuffs in one blow. thus Bhai Sahib’s great-grandfather Sardar Sukha Singh participated in the Guru Ka Bagh Morcha. It is a testament to the family’s commitment to the Sikh faith and community.
Balwant Singh often expressed his desire to serve the Panth (the Sikh community) and would tell his mother, “Get me the blessings of Sant ji so that my body too can serve the Panth.” His devotion to the Sikh faith and his yearning to contribute to its cause were evident in his words and actions.
The tragic events of September 1978 in Kanpur marked the climax of Balwant Singh’s dedication. During the struggle for justice and equality, four bullets struck his young body, and a sword cut his jaw. His older brother, Bhai Gurcharan Singh, was also hospitalized with a bullet wound in his right torso. The sacrifice of Balwant Singh and his family in the pursuit of justice is a testament to the unwavering spirit and dedication of the Kanpur Shaheeds in their defending respect of their guru and region integrity.

ਸਤੰਬਰ 1978 ਦਾ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਸਾਕਾ ਸਿਖ ਇਤਹਾਸ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਅਭੁਲਵੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ 8 ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਹੋਈ। ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਾਭਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਦੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਵਿਚੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ’ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਸਨ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਉਮਰ ਕੇਵਲ ੧੫ ਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਕਾਕਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਆਪ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸ: ਮਹਾਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਖੜੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿਲਾ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਨ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਅਜੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਪੰਜ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਇਆ ਸਿਰ ਤੋ ਉਠ ਗਿਆ ।
ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਭੈਣ ਤੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਭਰਾ ਹਨ। ਆਪ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੁਮਿਤਰਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੌਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਾਲਿਆ । ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਕੂਲ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਢਲੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਠਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਦਾ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਇਕ ਰੇੜ੍ਹੀ ਤੇ ਛੋਟਾ ਮੋਟਾ ਸਮਾਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਗੁਜਾਰਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ।
ਆਪ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਸੀ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਦਾਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੜਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਲਿਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਆਪ ਦੇ ਦਾਦਾ ਸ: ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਜਦ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਲਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਫੜੇ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਹਥਕੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕੋ ਝਟਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਥਕੜੀ ਤੋੜ ਦਿਤੀ । ਇਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਪੜਦਾਦਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਬਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੀ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੁਮਿਤ ਕੌਰ ਬੜੀ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਹੋਣਹਾਰ ਬਾਲਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦ’ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਮਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੌਤ ਜੋ ਤੋਂ ਥਾਪੜਾ ਦਿਵਾ ਦਿਓ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪੰਥ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਲਗੇ । ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਲਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜਥਾੜਾ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਟਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਸ਼ਹੀਦੇ ਦਾ ਵਡਾ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਚਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵੀ ਸੱਜੀ ਵੱਖੀ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਲ! ਲਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਸਪਤ’ਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।
