Bhai Gurjit Singh, a talented twenty-year-old, was born in Kanpur, his heart brimming with Sikh passion. He pursued his B.A. at DAV College in Kanpur, where he stood out as a brilliant student and an NCC champion, achieving great recognition in Jhansi and various other camps.
The martyr’s father, Joginder Singh Ji, hailed from Vasu village in the Falian tehsil of Gujarat district, Pakistan, before settling in Kanpur. The Vasu village is renowned for its unwavering commitment to the Sikh faith. Bhai Amar Singh Ji Vasu, a relative of the family, was a close associate of Master Tara Singh Ji, actively participating in the Guru Ka Bagh and Jaito marches. S. Raghbir Singh Vasu (grandfather) held the position of President of the Sikh Representative Board in Uttar Pradesh, while S. Joginder Singh Ji Vasu dutifully served the Panth in high-ranking government positions. Bhai Sahib’s father, Joginder Singh Vasu, was a prominent figure in Kanpur, holding the position of JCOD in the Defense Service.
On September 26, 1978, As the procession made its way toward the Nirankari Bhavan, Shaheed Gurjit Singh led from the front with his companions. When shots rang out within the procession, he fearlessly declared, “I am not the son of a coward; I am the son of Sri Guru Gobind Singh and shall persist.” In this resolute manner, he fell victim to a barrage of bullets, his body bearing multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head, one in the groin, both sides of the groin, both legs, one in the chest, and one in the chin, as per the post-mortem report.
Bhai Gurjit Singh had two elder brothers, one employed at Punjab and Sindh Bank in Surat and the other at Green Roadways in Kanpur. Tragically, the wedding of his sister, Charanjit Kaur, was scheduled for October 2, but this young hero’s life was sacrificed before he could partake in the joyous occasion.

ਇਸ ਵੀਹ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੋਣਹਾਰ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸਿੱਖੀ ਜਜ਼ਬੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਬਾ-ਲਬ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਡੀ.ਏ.ਵੀ. ਕਾਲਜ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੀ. ਏ. ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਸੀ। ਕਾਲਜ ਦਾ ਹੋਣਹਾਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਐਨ.ਸੀ.ਸੀ. ਦਾ ਚੈਂਪੀਅਨ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਝਾਂਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੈਂਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਚ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸ. ਜੋਗਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੂ, ਤਹਿਸੀਲ ਫਾਲੀਆਂ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਆ ਕੇ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵੱਸੇ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਵਾਸੂ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਪੰਥਕ ਜਜ਼ਬੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਬੜੇ ਉੱਘੇ ਹਨ। ਆਪ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਭਾਈ ਅਮਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵਾਸੂ ਮਾਸਟਰ ਤਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਤੇ ਹਮ-ਜਮਾਤੀ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਬਾਗ਼ ਤੇ ਜੈਤੋ ਦੇ ਮੋਰਚਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਸ. ਰਘਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵਾਸੂ (ਦਾਦਾ) ਯੂ. ਪੀ. ਸਿੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਨਿਧ ਬੋਰਡ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਸ. ਜੋਰਿੰਦਿਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵਾਸੂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਉੱਚ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਪੰਥ ਪਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਫਰਜ਼ ਨਿਭਾਏ। ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸ. ਜੋਗਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਾਸੂ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਦੇ ਉੱਘੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੀਫ਼ੈਂਸ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੇ .ਸੀ.ਓ.ਡੀ. ਸਨ।
26 ਸਤੰਬਰ 1978 ਨੂੰ ਜਦੋਂ ਨਕਲੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਭਵਨ ਵੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਗੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਜਲੂਸ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਲੀ ਚਲੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਾਇਰ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੋਵਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਸਪੁੱਤਰ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਚਲਾਂਗਾ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਾਛੜ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਜਰਵਾਣਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਛਾਨਣੀ-ਛਾਨਣੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਪੋਸਟ ਮਾਰਟਮ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਗੋਲੀ ਸਿਰ ਵਿਚ, ਇਕ ਪੁੜਪੁੜੀ ਵਿਚ, ਵੱਖੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪਾਸੇ, ਲੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪਾਸੇ, ਇਕ ਛਾਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਗੋਲੀ ਠੋਡੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਭਾਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਐਂਡ ਸਿੰਧ ਬੈਂਕ ਸੂਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਗਰੀਨ ਰੋਡਵੇਜ਼ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ। ਭੈਣ ਚਰਨਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੋ ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਨਿੱਕੜਾ ਵੀਰ ਮੌਤ ਲਾੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਨਾ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਗਿਆ।
