Bhai Kashmir Singh Ji, often affectionately referred to as ‘Baba Kashmir Singh Kanpur’ by the Sikh Sangat due to his profound knowledge in the study of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Gurbani, and Sikh history, was only 35 years old at the time of his passing.
Kashmir Singh was born on June 5, 1943, in the village of Bahlo, Tehsil Tarn Taran, District Amritsar. He was the son of Kundan Singh Ji and Harnam Kaur Ji. He received his primary education at Munare Wale School in Tarn Taran Sahib at the Government Higher Secondary School.
From an early age, Bhai Sahib Ji had a deep interest in spirituality and devoted himself to Bhajan Bandagi, ultimately discontinuing his formal education at the seventh standard.
Baba Kashmir Singh Kanpur was committed to the cause of Sikhism and served five months in jail during the 1960 Punjabi Suba movement. Upon his release, he relocated to Kanpur at his married sister’s home, where he learned motor driving from his brother-in-law and started working there.
During the 1965 war, Bhai Sahib secured a job at the “Survey of India.” It was during this period that he entered into matrimony with Bibi Mahinder Kaur from Merhane village near Hari-ke-Pattan, Dist Tarn Taran. However, his unwavering dedication to his faith led him to leave his job and return to Kanpur, where he made the service of the Guru his primary focus.
Bhai Sahib Ji dedicated his life to the study of Gurbani and Sikh history, as well as the Katha of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. His deep spirituality had a profound impact on the local Sikh community, leading to continued Sikh congregations at his residence in Gobind Nagar.
On special occasions like Gurpurabs and festivals, he organized vibrant celebrations and brought together Sikh Sangat, enriching their spiritual experience by reciting Gurbani from his heart. At his dera, he tirelessly served at Sri Akhand Sahib and in the langar, all while sweetly narrating Gurbani Katha. His sangat eagerly awaited his melodious Gurbani kirtan.
During the 400th anniversary of the founding of Sri Amritsar, Bhai Sahib played a pivotal role in motivating Sikh Sangats and organized trips to the historic Gurdwaras, bringing a large number of Sikhs to Sri Amritsar. During the journey, he recited kirtan, inspiring the Sangat with his devotion.
On 26 September 1978, Baba Kashmir Singh Kanpur actively participated in the protest against the fake Nirankari Bhawan. It is documented that he was wounded by the first bullet fired by Gurbachan Singh, chief leader of fake Nirankaris. Bhai Kashmir Singh displayed remarkable bravery, sustaining six gunshot wounds, four to the chest and two to the thighs, and ultimately laying down his life to uphold the honor of Guru Patshah. Before leaving for Gurdwara Sahib to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Jyoti Joti Gurpurab, he instructed his family to partake in Guru’s Parshad. He eventually received the ultimate blessing of martyrdom from Guru Sahib.
Bhai Kashmir Singh left behind his widow, Bibi Mahinder Kaur, and four young children, aged 9, 7, 5, and 3.
He was a compassionate individual with noble and altruistic thoughts, always willing to assist the suffering and destitute by engaging in Satsang and seeking solace in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. His fearless courage and unwavering faith in better days, despite his modest financial means, were emblematic of his indomitable spirit.

ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਬਾਬਾ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ
ਭਾਈ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤਾਂ ਅਜੇ 35 ਕੁ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਵਿਚ ਜੁਟੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ‘ਬਾਬਾ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ` ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਪੁਕਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
ਆਪ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 5 ਜੂਨ 1943 ਨੂੰ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਹਿਲੋ, ਤਹਿਸੀਲ ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਸ. ਕੁੰਦਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਨਾਮ ਕੌਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਖੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਆਪ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਢਲੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੋਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਗੌਰਮਿੰਟ ਹਾਇਰ ਸੈਕੰਡਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ, ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ।
ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਰਥ ਵੱਲ ਰੁਚੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਤਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਤਕ ਮਸਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ। ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਵਿੱਚੇ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਜਨ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵੱਲ ਸਾਰੀ ਰੁਚੀ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ 1960 ਦੇ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਪੰਜ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਕੱਟੀ। ਰਿਹਾਈ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਪਾਸ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਣਵੱਈਏ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੋਟਰ ਡਰਾਈਵਰੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਥੇ ਹੀ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਕਰ ਲਈ।
1965 ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਸਮੇਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੇ “ਸਰਵੇ ਆਫ ਇੰਡੀਆ! ਵਿਚ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ। ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਾਰਜ ਹਰੀ ਕੇ ਪੱਤਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਰਹਾਣੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਪਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰੁਚੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਬਿਡਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਨਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਕਾਨਪੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਗਏ। ਇਥੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਿਤਾਉਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਇਸ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਵੀ ਬੜਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਪੈਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਹਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਗਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜਾਈ ਬਣੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਤਿਉਹਾਰਾਂ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਗਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨਾਉਂਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਆਪ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖੋਂ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਅਨੰਦਤ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਡੇਰੇ ‘ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਲੰਗਰ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਜਿਥੇ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਉਥੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਣਨ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਰਸਿਕ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਨ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਸੌ ਸਾਲਾ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੇ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਲਿਆਏ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੂੰਜਾਂ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਸਤਕ ਨਿਵਾਏ ਸਨ।
ਨਕਲੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਭਵਨ ਵੱਲ ਰੋਸ ਜਲੂਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੜੇ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ। ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਕਲੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਗੁਰਬਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਗੋਲੀ ਪੱਟ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਲ ਛੇ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਚਾਰ ਛਾਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਪੱਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਣ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਆਹੂਤੀ ਦੇ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਾ ਟੀਕਾ ਲਾ ਗਏ।
ਆਪ ਜੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਘਰੋਂ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲ ਜਦ ਚਲੇ ਸਨ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿ ਗਏ ਕਿ ਤੁਸਾਂ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ ਛਕ ਲੈਣਾ। ਪਰ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ ਛਕ ਕੇ “ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ’ ਕਰ ਗਏ।
ਆਪ ਜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਧਰਮ ਪਤਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਬੱਚੀਆਂ 9 ਸਾਲ, 7 ਸਾਲ, 5 ਸਾਲ ਤੇ 3 ਸਾਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਡ ਗਏ।
ਆਪ ਬੜੇ ਨੇਕ ਤੇ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਊੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਦੁਖੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਦੀਆਂ ਜਿੰਦੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਵੰਡਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਲੜ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਆਪ ਬੜੇ ਨਿਡਰ ਤੇ ਦਲੇਰ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਪਤਲੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀਆਂ ਕਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਰਦੇ ਸਨ।
